DBP’s first major project for Castle Leisure Group was the Conversion of a former School and Office Building which was a Grade ‘B’ Listed Building, since Castle Leisure Group beginning in 1981.

The Clients youthful vision has seen the Castle Leisure Group grow to 450 Employees, this project being a further development of their long term growth. DBP were considered having been chosen from a shortlist of companies having won Interior Design Awards since 1989-2000.

The brief was to create an entertainment complex developing the Client’s Sportsters Brand successfully used by our client in their Stirling, Falkirk & Paisley operations.

The creation of a seamless atmosphere through the venue from Day to Night was the challenge. The Design and integration with a client technology package was advanced to create a multi-level venue with a concept interior approach to each individual space.
The Project was delegated over two phases – Construction and Interior Fit Out over a 12 month Construction period. The design was the creation of the Castle Leisure Group vision, and the 1st of a Roll Out Programme.
The Project initially involved a lengthy Planning Consultation and Planning Appeal which was successful. The project was designed and costed to establish the project value, and the construction phasing agreed.

The scheme was designed as a multi-level venue with the Sportsters themed Bar Brand used as the pivotal core of the design from which all other spaces flow.

Overlooking Mezzanine galleries were created linked vertically and horizontally to the wings of the Listed Building.

The building was a fine example of Italianate Architecture externally dating from 1860.

All the exterior characteristics of the Institution of Learning for Boys and Girls were maintained and enhanced, with a particular emphasis on the Portico Entrance features.

The scheme allowed for the interaction of all the spaces and offers users a choice of spaces into which to participate.

The design offers customers private parking. External Terraces, Bar, Café & Restaurant with a Children’s Play space. Upper mezzanine bar spaces with a Night Venue on 3 varying levels over the lower floors. A complex design study with an impressive pedigree.
The brief for the project provided a number of challenges.
• Develop a sustainable design solution
• Replacement to accommodate highly technical & specialist computer controlled systems and data installations.

The approach used was to create the necessary well insulated envelope into which the control supplies and the Mechanical & Electrical design data could be installed in as minimal and unobtrusive a way as practicable.

Services were coordinated with the Mechanical & Electrical installers and servicing routes agreed and coordinated including data trays.

Construction Issues
A two stage construction programme assisted with site programming with the development split into a construction phase and an interior Fit Out Programme. The Client encouraged creative dialogue and a number of initiatives evolved through the Construction Programme, including:-

• Integration of Electrical & Data Supplies.
• Development of finishes & lighting systems.

The Building Conversion responds to the Themed Leisure Complex successfully emphasising our Client’s aspirations as a cutting edge design solution using new and ground breaking technology, yet bringing a new ‘life’ to the building.

Perth was the first of the Castle Leisure Group’s roll-out programme and represents good value for within relatively tight budgetary constraints.

The Building was delivered with due consideration to its long term cost in use and longevity of finish.

Together in association with our Client the project sets a standard for subsequent developments within central Scotland by Castle Leisure Group.
